Air India Data Leak: Leaked personal information of 45 lakh passengers including credit and debit cards, find out what to do to stay safe - Knowledge World

As a result of cyber fraud, data fraud has been heard in recent times. Often in the news headlines, we get the news of being hacked by a big organization, a famous person, or even the common man. In that case, this time Air India's name was involved in the data hacking incident. According to reports, the personal information of 4.5 million passengers of the state-owned airline has been leaked. It is known that about 10 years of data has been hacked from 28 August 2011 to 3 February this year. This information includes names of passengers, date of birth, ticket information, passport information, credit card information, Star Alliance and Air India frequent flight information - including details. Naturally, millions of passengers around the world are worried about this incident. Let's find out in detail about this incident.

What did Air India say?

Air India said in a statement to the media that the SITA PSS data processor of the passenger service system responsible for storing and processing personal information of passengers has come under cyber attack.

What information has been leaked

Data such as names, dates of birth, contact details, passport information, ticket information, credit and debit card details of Air India flyers, Star Alliance have been leaked.

No information was leaked

Fortunately, CVV / CVC credit and debit card numbers have not been leaked, as they are not stored in the SITA PSS data processor, Air India said. Also, no password data has been hacked.

What passengers need to do immediately to stay safe

If you have ever booked an Air India flight, change the password for all accounts immediately. This includes internet banking and debit or credit card PIN passwords. As a precautionary measure, you can replace your old debit or credit card with a new one from the bank. If this is not possible, keep an eye on the transactions of the respective accounts in the coming days and save as little money as possible on them at this time.

How leaked data can be a target for hackers and cybercriminals, and what passengers need to do to stay safe

Usually, after hacking any database, hackers try to take phishing attempts. Please do not click on any unknown weblink you receive via SMS or email. With this leaked data, you may fall victim to phishing attacks or other related scams. Also, keep in mind that scammers may use this hacked data in other ways to target you. So be careful and do not reply to an unknown call, SMS, WhatsApp message or email.

Also, if you receive a call from the so-called customer care executive of Air India, your bank or any other company claiming to solve a problem related to your account or talking about some credit card offer or protection plan, no such call will be answered. Don't give up. This is because such calls leak your personal information, as well as help scammers, get you involved in bigger scams.

What steps has Air India taken so far in this regard?

Air India claims that they have changed the password to protect the affected servers. No more abnormalities were noticed after the servers were secured, so new users are completely protected. They are resetting the passwords for the Air India FFP program and contacting credit card issuers to notify them. An investigation has been launched into the incident and experts are being called in to help secure the information, Air India said.
