Why the Apple Watch isn't called the iWatch - Knowledge World

In today's analytical tune, we will discuss why Apple Watch was not named iWatch.

If we look at Apple's long history, we will notice that their products are iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad, which means that the letter i precedes all products. But it's a little surprising, when it comes to their watch, why Apple Watch. Don’t they preserve that tradition on their watch? Why not? Is there a reason behind this? To answer all these questions, I have arranged this tune today.

Why not Apple Watch iWatch?

In an interview with Blomberg a few days ago, Tim Cook was asked why his watch was named Apple Watch instead of iWatch, but there was no specific answer. But does the new CEO, Tim Cook, have a hand in this naming?

No! It's not that the CEO has no authority in naming certain Apple products. You have to go a little deeper to get the answer to the question. The main reason why Apple Watch is called Apple Watch is the trademark complexity! When Apple's product was in development, they had to fight with a few companies to legally name it iWatch.
A company called OMG Electronics in the United States claims that they have already trademarked the name iWatch. Similarly, an Irish-based company called Pro Bendy uses iWatch for their watches, which applies to all countries in the European Union, while a Chinese company also uses the name.
So establishing a new name in these countries is not a difficult task for Apple, but a matter of a few million dollars settlement.

However, such complications were not new to Apple, even before a Chinese company had to pay 80 million to get the iPad name. Because a company called Proview had already trademarked the name in their own name. The name of the iPhone was also trademarked by Cisco, Apple. However, Apple did not disclose how much money was paid to Cisco.
Who is to say that companies may anticipate the product in order to sell it to Apple at a higher price, and trademark it in their own name.

Realizing that future trademark complications could arise, Apple in 2010 sought to trademark the "i" prefix for itself but was unable to do so in court. The court ruled that no particular company could use the "i" prefix.

In 2007, Steve Jobs renamed Apple TV iTv, but the name was already trademarked by a British broadcasting company, and despite many legal battles, they were unable to retain the name, most recently Apple Tv.

Last word
So this was basically the reason behind naming Apple Watch. Who knows, Apple's next product may have a preconceived notion that a company might be moving towards a trademark.
